De prentenserie Elles toont scènes uit de Parijse maisons closes: bordelen die door de Franse staat werden gedoogd en gecontroleerd. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec kwam daar regelmatig, en logeerde er zelfs. In zijn prentenserie verwerkte hij het dagelijks leven van de prostituees.
Op de prenten zien we de vrouwen in hun privévertrekken. Ze slapen, ontbijten, maken hun toilet of wachten op klanten. De intieme voorstellingen hebben naar huidige maatstaven geen uitgesproken erotisch karakter. In de tijd van Lautrec vond men zulke prenten echter schandalig en onzedelijk.
In de 19de eeuw was de lithografie een enorm populaire techniek onder kunstenaars. Met deze serie toonde Lautrec dat hij er een meester in was. Sommige van zijn litho’s bestaan uit grote kleurvlakken en knallen van het papier. In andere gebruikte hij slechts één kleur en bouwde hij de voorstelling uitsluitend op uit subtiele lijnen. Ook paste hij hier en daar crachis toe, een techniek waarbij de inkt wordt aangebracht in spetters. Het exclusieve karakter van deze beroemde serie wordt benadrukt door het luxe papier en de kleine oplage.
